West Lothian College is STEM Assured. Congratulations!

West Lothian College has been awarded the prestigious STEM-Assured Standard by the New Engineering Foundation (NEF) - The Innovation Institute, following a Panel Assessment earlier this year.

The STEM Assured Standard provides a robust framework that benchmarks and recognises excellence in the college’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) provision.  West Lothian College is one of two in Scotland to achieve the Standard. This prestigious award is designed and recognised by business and industry, and is endorsed by the government and regulatory agencies. NEF has a set of criteria which it uses to assess an organisations performance including strategy and planning, engagement, design and delivery, innovation, standards and impact.

Lindsay Seywright, Assistant Principal from West Lothian College said: “STEM learning is fundamental to Scotland’s society and economy. Scotland and West Lothian

has many notable science discoveries and inventions over the centuries, and it is vital for the economy that we continue to promote and continue to improve STEM education to ensure Scotland keeps its place in the future and West Lothian College has a key role to play in this.

“There are many benefits from the
STEM Assured Standard for the college, our students and local businesses.  It will support the college’s strategic planning and development of STEM curriculum and it will increase the employability of our students as it is recognised by employers.

“To achieve the
STEM-Assured Standard the college’s application was supported by some of our partners, including, Edinburgh Napier University,  Morrison Construction, Graham Construction, Scottish Food and Drink Federation, College Development Network, Shin-Etsu Handotai Europe Limited, Johnson and Johnson, The Robertson Group, Energy Skills Partnership, Construction Skills (CITB) and Young’s Seafood.

“College staff were also totally committed and, of course, our fantastic learners from Engineering, Construction, Science and Computing also impressed the Panel with their extensive knowledge and positive support.”

Professor Sa’ad Medhat, CEO, NEF: The Innovation Institute said: “in today’s highly competitive marketplace making your STEM programmes stand out to your employers and students is an expected make of differentiation. Achieving the STEM Assured status at West Lothian College demonstrates a benchmark of best practice and drive performance excellence for the college and its stakeholders regionally and internationally.  We are very pleased to welcome West Lothian College to the exclusive STEM Assured club”.
